Apocalypse Reborn: My Beast Shifter Harem
Chapter 1 CHAPTER ONE

ARIA "Get back! The whole thing's coming down!" The shout barely registers over the groaning metal above me, and I keep moving deeper into the tunnel because I hear something that nobody else seems to notice. A child's cry, muffled and weak, cutting through the chaos. "Hayes, what are you doing? Get out of there!" My supervisor's voice crackles desperately through the radio, but I ignore it because I have never been able to walk away from someone who needs help, and right now that little girl needs me more than I need to survive this. The tunnel shakes violently around me, dust raining down from the cracked ceiling, and I spot the child pinned beneath a collapsed beam, her small body trembling as she screams for her mother. "Somebody help me! Please, somebody help!" "I'm coming! I'm coming! Stay with me." I drop to my knees beside her, ignoring the rough debris cutting into my palms, and I grip her face gently to force her gaze away from the darkness above us. Her legs are trapped under the beam, blood seeping through her torn clothes, and her eyes are wide with terror that makes my chest ache. "Hey, hey, look at me. What's your name?" "L-Lily. My name is Lily." "Lily, that's a beautiful name." I grab the beam with both hands, ignoring the sharp edges digging into my flesh. "I need you to stay still for me. Can you do that?" She nods frantically, tears streaming down her cheeks. "Please, I don't want to die. I don't want to die." "You are not going to die." The words come out stronger than I feel, the beam shifting slightly as I strain against it. "I promise you that. You hear me? I'm getting you out of here, Lily. Just hold on a little longer." "Aria, I'm ordering you to evacuate! That tunnel is going to collapse any second!" My supervisor's voice cuts through the radio. "I can't leave her!" The metal screeches as I push upward, the weight nearly crushing me as I wedge my shoulder underneath and use every ounce of strength I have left. Lily screams again, and I grit my teeth and push harder until the beam moves just enough for her to pull her legs free. "Move! Crawl toward the light! Go, go, go!" She scrambles forward on her hands and knees, crying and coughing from the dust, and I follow behind her, my body screaming in protest as I drag myself through the debris. The entrance is so close now, I can see the emergency lights flickering and the rescue workers waving their arms frantically. "She's coming! Get the stretcher ready!" "Come on, Aria! Now!" I grab Lily's ankle and yank her forward just as the ceiling behind us collapses with a deafening roar, so loud it feels like my eardrums have burst. I push her toward the waiting arms of the rescue workers, her small body pulled to safety, and I see her face turn back toward me as she screams my name. "Miss! Miss, come on!" "I'm coming, I'm-" I try to move, I try to crawl forward, but the ground gives way beneath me and I feel myself falling into darkness. Strange lights begin appearing through the gaps above, beautiful streaks of light painting the sky in colors I have never seen before, and I watch them as I fall, mesmerized despite everything. "Did you see that? What is that?" "It's a meteor shower. They're everywhere. Something's wrong." "Is that... is that an explosion?" The ground begins shaking even harder than before, the tremors spreading across the city like waves, and I realize this is not just a collapsed tunnel but something much bigger. The meteors are not ordinary, the energy they release spreading across Earth like a disease, disrupting technology and changing the atmosphere and triggering disasters all over the world. The Fall. That is what they will call it later. The moment humanity's old world ended forever. I hit the ground hard, my body broken in ways I cannot even feel anymore, and my vision fades in and out as the ceiling collapses completely above me. I can still hear Lily's screams echoing somewhere far away, her small voice calling for me over and over again. "Miss! Miss!" "Get her out of here! Move, move, move!" "She saved my life. Please, she saved my life, please go back for her!" "I'm sorry, sweetheart. I'm so sorry. There's nothing we can do now." "Please," I whisper through the blood filling my mouth, "Please, let her be okay." The girl survives, I see her small silhouette being carried away by rescue workers before the darkness swallows everything, and my final thought is not fear for myself but relief that she made it out alive. Then I close my eyes, believing my story has ended. A cold voice echoes through my fading consciousness, speaking directly inside my mind without any warmth whatsoever. [Life signs detected.] "Who's there?" I ask. [Host consciousness unstable.] "I said who's there? What is this?" [Analyzing final action. Survival instinct confirmed. Self-sacrificial behavior confirmed. Rare compatibility detected.] The voice studies my choices and my memories and the moment I sacrificed my own survival for another person, and I try to demand answers but my body refuses to respond. "Where are you? I can't see anyone." [System 001 has selected a host.] "I don't understand. I'm dying. I should be dead." [Beginning binding process.] A strange warmth spreads through my fading consciousness, something indescribable that pulls me away from the darkness and pushes me toward something else entirely. "Wait. What's happening to me? What is this?" [System 001 binding complete. Welcome, Host. Awaiting awakening.] "What does that mean? You can't just say things like that and expect me to-" [Host consciousness fading. Hold steady.] "I don't have any idea what you're talking about! What are you?" [System 001 is your guide. Continue holding steady. Awakening imminent.] The warmth intensifies, spreading through my chest and limbs and head, and I feel myself being pulled away from the collapsed tunnel, away from the broken body I left behind, away from everything I have ever known. "Where are you taking me? Answer me!" Before I can finish my question, before I can understand what is happening, everything disappears and I am gone. [System 001 binding complete.] [Welcome, Host.] [Awaiting awakening.]

Chapter 2 CHAPTER TWO

I wake up to silence, a dead silence that presses against my ears like cotton, and the first thing I notice is the smell. Dust and rust and something else, something unfamiliar that burns my nostrils and makes me cough. My eyes open slowly, and I expect to see emergency lights or doctors or rescue workers hovering over me with worried expressions, but instead I find myself lying beneath the remains of a ruined building, concrete and twisted metal scattered everywhere like the world has been turned inside out. For several seconds I believe I am still trapped beneath the subway, that the collapse buried me alive and I somehow survived, but then I notice the sky through the gaps above me and I realize something is terribly wrong. The clouds move strangely, carrying colors I have never seen before, purple and green streaking the horizon, and the air feels heavier than it should, almost as if the world has changed while I was unconscious. I try to sit up, my body aching in ways I cannot describe, and immediately I notice something impossible. My injuries are gone. The wounds that should have killed me, the broken bones and internal bleeding and everything else, they have all disappeared like they never existed. My hands are clean, my arms are whole, and I do not understand how any of this is possible. Before I can process what is happening, a familiar voice speaks inside my mind, cold and utterly without emotion. [System 001 has completed host awakening.] I freeze, my heart pounding against my ribs as the memory comes rushing back. The voice before darkness, the strange warmth spreading through my consciousness, and the words I did not understand. The system. It was real, it was not a hallucination, it actually happened to me. "What the hell is going on?" My voice comes out rough and cracked, barely above a whisper. "Where am I? Why am I alive?" [Host is currently located in what was once known as Chicago, Illinois. Host is alive because System 001 initiated binding before complete cellular death occurred.] Another chill runs through me. "Before complete cellular death?" I push myself to my feet, my legs trembling beneath me, and I look around at the devastation surrounding me. "What does that even mean? I died. I should be dead. I felt myself die." [The Fall changed everything, Host. One hundred years have passed since the event you witnessed.] I stop breathing. "What did you just say?" [One hundred years have passed since The Fall. The current year is 2126. Host Aria Hayes died in 2026.] "That's impossible. That can't be right." I shake my head, my hands trembling as I press them against my temples. "I was just in the tunnel. I was just saving Lily. That was minutes ago, not a hundred years." [Host was unconscious for exactly 100 years, 3 months, and 12 days. The system kept Host's consciousness preserved while the new body was constructed. Host has now been fully integrated.] "You kept me alive for a hundred years?" I cannot wrap my mind around it, cannot understand how any of this is possible. "Why? Why would you do that?" [Host was selected for compatibility with System 001. Host's self-sacrificial behavior and survival instincts made Host an ideal candidate for the binding process. More information will be revealed as Host progresses.] I want to scream, I want to punch something, I want to wake up from this nightmare and find myself back in the hospital with doctors telling me everything is going to be okay. But this is real, this is happening, and I need to accept that before I lose my mind completely. I start walking through the mess, my legs carrying me forward automatically as I search for any sign of the life I once knew. The buildings are still standing, some of them anyway, but they are now a mess of what they used to be, windows shattered and walls crumbling and nature reclaiming everything. I find an old photograph lying in the rubble, a family smiling at the camera, and I wonder if they survived or if they died like everyone else. Everyone I loved is gone. My mother, my father, my friends, my colleagues, all of them dead and buried and forgotten while I slept for a hundred years. There is no home for me to return to, no one waiting for me, no familiar faces to greet me when I wake up. The only thing left from my old life is myself, and I do not even know who I am anymore. [Warning. Danger detected. Incoming hostile entity.] The system's voice jolts me out of my spiraling thoughts, and I turn around just in time to see something I cannot explain. A creature is moving through the ruins, its body twisted and deformed, its skin covered in scales that gleam in the strange light, and its eyes are red and hungry as they lock onto me. "What the hell is that?" [Mutated beast. Evolution caused by residual energy from the meteor shower.] "It's coming toward me." [Correct. Host is advised to run.] I do not need to be told twice. I take off running through the ruined streets, my emergency training kicking in as I dodge and leap over collapsed walls, but the creature is faster than anything I have ever seen. It moves like a predator, like something built specifically for hunting, and I know within seconds that I cannot outrun it. I duck into a collapsed building, pressing myself against the wall as I try to catch my breath, but the creature bursts through the entrance with a loud roar and I realize I am cornered. There is nowhere left to go, no escape route, no way out. "This is it," I whisper, my voice breaking as I stare into the creature's hungry eyes. "This is really how I die." Then a roar shakes the entire street, so loud and so powerful that the ground vibrates under my feet, and the creature attacking me suddenly freezes. Its red eyes widen with something I did not think beasts could feel, something that looks exactly like fear, and I watch as a massive white lion steps from the ruins behind it. The lion is impossible. It is too large, too intelligent, too powerful, and it moves like a warrior rather than an animal, every movement precise and deliberate as it approaches the mutated beast. The creature tries to flee, tries to escape, but the lion is faster, and in seconds it destroys the mutated beast with a single swipe of its enormous paw. I stare at the dead creature, then at the lion, and I cannot decide which one terrifies me more. The white lion turns to face me, its golden eyes locking onto mine, and I see something in those eyes that makes my breath catch. This is not just an animal, this is something else entirely, something I do not have words for. Then the lion begins changing. I watch in disbelief as its massive body shrinks and shifts, and where the beast stood moments ago there is now a man. A tall man with silver-white hair and golden eyes and unmistakable animal features that mark him as something far beyond human. He studies me carefully, his gaze sharp and assessing, and I see confusion flicker across his face. Because he knows. He knows that humans from before The Fall should no longer exist, and yet here I am, standing in front of him, alive and breathing and just as confused as he is. "Who are you?" His voice is deep and rough, like he does not speak often. I refuse to answer because I have learned one thing in this new world already, that trusting strangers can get you killed, and I do not know if this man is a threat or an ally. He steps closer, and I take a step back, my body tensing as I prepare to fight if I have to. "My name is Kael Ashbourne. I'm a shifter. I'm not going to hurt you." "Forgive me if I don't believe you," I say, my voice shaking despite my best efforts to stay calm. "I just watched you turn from a lion into a man. I don't know what you are." "I told you what I am. A shifter." He studies me again, his golden eyes narrowing slightly. "You're from before The Fall, aren't you?" "I don't know what that means." "You survived The Fall without changing. Your type is extremely rare. Most of them died out decades ago." He takes another step closer, and this time I do not move away. "How are you still alive? You should have died a hundred years ago." "I was told I was asleep. Something about consciousness preservation." I shake my head, frustration bubbling up inside me. "I don't understand any of this." Before Kael can respond, the system's voice echoes inside my mind again, urgent and sharp. [High-level shifter detected. Unknown compatibility response detected. Beginning analysis.] "What does that mean?" I demand out loud, and I see Kael's eyes narrow at my sudden outburst. [Analysis ongoing. Host's hidden identity has not yet awakened. More information will be provided when analysis is complete.] "What hidden identity? What are you talking about?" Kael steps closer to me, his expression shifting from confusion to something I cannot read, and I feel a strange pull in my chest as he approaches. His golden eyes lock onto mine, and I see something flicker in them, something that looks almost like recognition. For the first time in many years, his instincts are telling him something impossible. This woman should not exist. But she does. And somehow, his beast knows her. "What's your name?" he asks, his voice softer now. "Aria. Aria Hayes." He repeats my name under his breath, like he is testing how it sounds on his tongue, and I feel that strange pull again, stronger this time, almost like a magnetic force drawing me toward him.

Chapter 3 CHAPTER THREE

I do not understand anything about this world, about this situation, about the man standing in front of me. That is the only thought repeating in my mind as I stare at Kael. A hundred years. That is how long System 001 claimed I had been gone, the world I knew dead and buried, the people I loved turned to dust, and now the first living person I meet is a man whose beast reacts to me like we have known each other forever. Kael watches me carefully, his golden eyes studying every movement I make, and I realize most humans who encounter a shifter in the wasteland react with fear or panic, they beg for protection or run before understanding what they are running from. But I am different, I am afraid yes, I am terrified actually, but I still question him because that is who I am and I will not stop being myself just because the world ended. "Who are you?" I ask, my voice steadier than I feel. Kael almost looks amused, a faint twitch at the corner of his mouth. A normal human would ask how to survive, his expression seems to say, but I ask for his identity. "My name is Kael. Nothing more." I notice immediately that he is hiding something, but so am I, and neither of us trusts the other enough to ask the questions that really matter. Before either of us can continue, System 001 interrupts with its cold robotic voice. [Warning. Multiple hostile energy signatures detected. Current location is no longer safe.] Kael's expression shifts instantly, his body tensing like a predator sensing danger. "We leave. Now." For once I do not argue because I have no desire to die twice in one day, and I follow him through the ruined city as the howling grows closer behind us. The world outside is familiar and unfamiliar at the same time, buildings I remember from my childhood still standing but transformed and I realize humanity did not disappear after The Fall, it evolved into something else entirely. As we move, Kael explains what happened after the meteors struck, the energy released changing everything, some humans awakening abilities and others experiencing mutations and some evolving into shifters capable of taking beast forms far beyond ordinary animals. "There are different shifter bloodlines," he says, his voice low and careful. "Predators, birds, felines, ancient clans." I look at him. "And you?" Kael is silent for a long moment, something dark passing across his face. "Lion bloodline." A pause, then softer, almost reluctant. "Partly." I do not push because I know what it feels like to have parts of yourself you do not want to share, and I respect that boundary even though I am burning with questions. We arrive at Kael's temporary camp, a sheltered area tucked between collapsed buildings, and I immediately tense, because I expected a lone monster but instead I find a group. Three shifters are waiting, and the first one I notice is a black falcon shifter with a sharp smile and eyes that seem to see straight through me. "Kael brought someone back?" He looks at me curiously, his head tilting like a bird examining prey. "That's new." Kael ignores him completely. "Rowan." The man grins, unbothered by the cold treatment. "So she does know you have a name. I was starting to wonder." I notice something strange about the way they interact, they are not afraid of Kael, they do not treat him like a weapon or a monster, they treat him like family, and that surprises me more than anything I have seen today. These people trust each other, rely on each other, and I have not trusted anyone since I woke up in this nightmare. That night, when the others are asleep and I am alone with my thoughts, System 001 finally answers my questions. [Host identity analysis complete. Classification: Moonbinder.] I frown, the word unfamiliar and strange on my tongue. "Moonbinder? What does that mean?" The system explains that after The Fall many abilities appeared, some could create flames and some could control elements and some enhanced physical abilities, but Moonbinders were different. They were not created to destroy, they were created to connect, to form soul bonds with shifters that could increase their power and control their beast instability and awaken hidden abilities in the Moonbinder herself. But there was one problem. [Moonbinders disappeared after The Fall. Current existence: Unknown.] I stare at the words floating in my mind, my heart pounding. "Then why am I one?" The system pauses, a long silence that makes me want to scream. [Answer restricted.] Of course. The system always had more secrets than answers, and I am tired of being kept in the dark. A notification appears brightly. [New mission activated. Mission: Establish connection with a compatible shifter. Reward: Personal Storage Space - 10,001 square meters.] My eyes widen because storage in a world where survival depends on supplies is priceless, food and medicine and equipment, everything I find could be preserved and carried without weighing me down. "But I need a bond?" [Correct. Moonbinder bonds cannot be forced. A shifter must willingly accept.] I look toward Kael, the man whose beast recognized me, the answer obvious. The system confirms it immediately. [Compatible shifter detected. Target: Kael. Synchronization possibility: Extremely high.] Later that night, I watch Kael repair his equipment, his hands moving with practiced efficiency, and I notice that everything he owns shows signs of being repaired countless times. He is not someone living comfortably, he is someone surviving, and I understand that better than most. Rowan appears beside me, his footsteps silent. "You're curious about him." I do not deny it because there is no point. "He saved my life." "He saves a lot of lives." Rowan's voice becomes quieter, the teasing edge fading. "Kael wasn't born free. He was created through experiments, enhanced and modified and designed to become a weapon. To the people who created him, he was never a person, only a tool." I understand immediately, the cold realization settling in my chest. Kael does not fear monsters, he fears belonging to someone who sees him as property, and that is a fear I can relate to more than I want to admit. The next morning, the group enters an abandoned supply station to search for resources, but something else is waiting for us. Mutated creatures emerge from the ruins, their bodies twisted and hungry, and Kael transforms before my eyes into a massive white lion that is powerful and terrifying and beautiful all at once. But something is wrong. The longer the battle continues, the more unstable he becomes, his movements growing more violent and his instincts taking over like he is losing himself to the beast inside. [High-level shifters experience beast instability. Moonbinder synchronization can stabilize this condition.] I finally understand. I am not special because I can gain power from these bonds, I am special because I can save those who are losing themselves, and that changes everything. After the battle, Kael returns injured, not defeated but exhausted, and I approach him because I cannot help myself. "You protected me." Kael looks away, his jaw tight. "You would not survive alone." "You do not even know me." A long silence stretches between us, heavy and charged. Then, so quietly I almost miss it: "My instincts know something I do not." The words surprise both of us, and before I can respond System 001 activates. [Emergency detection. Compatible bond resonance detected. Beginning evaluation.] The moment our hands touch, the world seems to go quiet, everything fading except the warmth spreading through my palm and the strange pull in my chest. Then a voice interrupts, human and sharp. "Stop." I turn and see a group of armed scavengers standing at the edge of the ruins, their eyes not on Kael but on me, and the leader steps forward with an expression that shifts from recognition to shock to naked greed. "A Moonbinder." The air becomes tense, Kael immediately stepping in front of me with a growl building in his chest. The scavenger laughs, a cold sound that makes my skin crawl. "Do you know what someone like her is worth?" Kael's eyes turn gold, his beast answering before he does. "She is under my protection." The scavenger smiles, slow and cruel. "Then you know what that means." I feel cold, colder than I have ever felt, because being rare did not make me safe, it made me valuable, and valuable things are hunted. System 001 gives its final warning, cold and clinical. [Moonbinder identity exposed. Host survival probability decreasing. Recommendation: Complete first soul bond with compatible shifter.] I look at Kael, the man whose beast recognized me, the man standing between me and the entire world, the man who might become my first bond. But a bond cannot be forced, it must be chosen, and now both of us have to decide what comes next. The scavengers advance, and Kael's growl deepens, and I realize with terrifying clarity that my life will never be simple again.
