HAYES RESIDENCE 🖋️ The envelope arrived on a Tuesday morning. Elena Hayes had been waiting for it for six months. She just never expected to be so terrified when it finally came. "Elena!" Her mother's voice came from the sitting room. "There's a letter for you!" Elena stepped out of the small kitchen, wiping her hands on the sides of her jeans. "From who?" "I don't know. It looks important." Her mother was standing beside the front door, holding a thick cream-colored envelope. Elena's eyes immediately caught the silver crest embossed on the corner. Her heart stopped. She knew that crest. She moved closer. For a few seconds, she simply stared. Blackwood Academy. The school she had dreamed about since she was fifteen. The school she had spent three years preparing for. The school she had almost convinced herself she would never attend because students like her weren't supposed to belong in places like that. She had studied beneath weak lights when everyone else was asleep. She had borrowed textbooks. She had turned down outings because she needed to study. She had filled out the scholarship application six months ago and then spent every day afterward pretending she didn't care whether she was accepted. Now the answer was in her hands. "Open it," her mother whispered. Elena swallowed. "What if it's bad news?" "Then we'll face it together." Elena carefully tore open the envelope. Her eyes moved across the first line. Then the second. Her hand flew to her mouth. "Mom..." Her mother stepped closer. "What is it?" Elena looked up. Tears were already gathering in her eyes. "I got it." Her mother's eyes widened. "What?" "I got the scholarship." For one second, neither of them moved. Then her mother screamed. Elena laughed through her tears as they threw their arms around each other. "I got it!" Elena cried. "Mom, I actually got it!" "You did it!" "It's a full scholarship!" Her mother held her face between both hands. "I knew you could." Elena laughed again. For the first time in a long time, the little house felt warm. No unpaid bills. No whispered arguments. No worries about what tomorrow would bring. Just two people holding onto a dream that had finally become real. Then her mother looked down at the letter. Her smile disappeared. Elena noticed. "What?" "Nothing." "Mom." Her mother folded the letter slightly. "I said nothing." Elena frowned. "You were smiling two seconds ago." "I'm still happy." "Then why do you look scared?" Her mother didn't answer. Before Elena could ask again, the front door opened. Her father walked inside. He looked tired. His tie was loosened, his shirt sleeves rolled up, and the expression on his face told Elena that work had not gone well. She immediately forgot her mother's strange reaction. "Dad!" He looked at her. "What?" "I got the scholarship." His expression changed. It was subtle. But Elena noticed. The smile that had started forming on his face disappeared. "The scholarship?" "Yes!" "From where?" "Blackwood Academy." Silence. Her father's eyes moved to the envelope. Then to her mother. Something passed between them. Something Elena didn't understand. Her father held out his hand. "Let me see it." She gave him the letter. He read it. His face became colder with every line. Elena's excitement slowly faded. "Dad?" He folded the letter. "You aren't going." She stared at him. "What?" "You heard me." "But-" "No." Her father's voice was firm. "You are not attending Blackwood Academy." Elena looked at her mother. Her mother wouldn't meet her eyes. "But I got a full scholarship." "I know." "We can't afford a school like that." "You don't need to." "Then what's the problem?" Her father placed the letter on the table. "Some opportunities aren't worth taking." Elena stared at him. "That's not an answer." "It is the answer you're getting." "Dad, I've worked for this!" "I know." "Then why are you doing this?" He looked at her for a long moment. There was something in his eyes she couldn't understand. Fear. Not anger. Fear. "I said no, Elena." He turned and walked away. Elena watched him disappear down the hallway. Her mother sighed. "Please don't push him right now." "Why?" "He's tired." "No, Mom." Elena shook her head. "There's something you're not telling me." Her mother went quiet. And that silence told Elena more than an explanation could have. She picked up the scholarship letter. "I'm going." Her mother looked at her. "Elena..." "I've spent three years working for this." She hugged the letter against her chest. "I'm not throwing it away." That evening, Elena sat on her bed with the acceptance letter beside her. Her room was small. The paint on one wall had begun to peel, and the wooden desk she'd used since junior high had a broken drawer. But this room had witnessed every late-night study session. Every failed test she cried over. Every time she promised herself she would do better. She picked up the letter again. Blackwood Academy. She smiled. Whatever her father was hiding, she would figure it out. She had earned her place. She wasn't going to let anyone take it from her. BLACKWOOD'S RESIDENCE 🖋️ Across town, the Blackwood residence stood behind enormous iron gates. The mansion was so large that Elena's entire house could probably fit inside one wing. Damon Blackwood stood in front of the mirror in his bedroom, adjusting the cuff of his shirt. He looked at his reflection without much interest. Tall. Dark-haired. Confident. The kind of handsome that made people stare even when he wasn't trying. A knock sounded. "Come in." The door opened. Adrian Cole walked in first. "Are you seriously still getting dressed?" Damon glanced at him through the mirror. "I'm dressed." "You're standing in front of a mirror." "Because I look good." Adrian laughed. "You are unbelievably annoying." Sebastian Sterling entered behind him, carrying his phone. "He's been annoying since birth." Damon turned around. "Jealousy doesn't suit either of you." The three boys laughed. They had known each other for years. Damon Blackwood. Adrian Cole. Sebastian Sterling. Their families were among the wealthiest and most influential in the city, and their names alone were enough to make most students at Blackwood Academy think twice before crossing them. But money wasn't the only thing they had in common. They were competitive. Confident. Arrogant. And almost impossible to separate. Adrian dropped onto the sofa. "So, are you ready for the new school year?" Damon picked up his watch. "School is school." "You mean boring." "Exactly." Sebastian looked up from his phone. "You know you're supposed to graduate soon, right?" Damon smiled. "Best news I've heard all year." Adrian shook his head. "You're going to miss this place." "No." "You're going to miss the attention." Damon paused. Then smiled. "Maybe." Sebastian laughed. "At least you're honest." Damon slipped his watch onto his wrist. He wasn't thinking about relationships. He wasn't thinking about love. And he certainly wasn't thinking about some scholarship student who was about to walk into his carefully controlled world. For Damon, Blackwood Academy was simple. Friends. Basketball. Girls. Parties. And staying out of his father's way. He had no reason to believe this year would be any different. He was wrong. BLACKWOOD ACADEMY 🖋️ Monday morning arrived faster than Elena expected. She stood outside the gates of Blackwood Academy with her backpack over one shoulder. Her palms were sweaty. Her stomach was tight. Students moved around her in expensive cars and polished uniforms. She looked down at her own clothes. They were neat. Simple. Nothing like the designer outfits some of the students were wearing. For a second, insecurity crept in. Then she remembered her scholarship letter. She had earned this. She lifted her chin and walked through the gates. The school was beautiful. Massive stone buildings surrounded a perfectly maintained courtyard. Tall windows reflected the morning sun, while students gathered in small groups beneath the trees. Elena stopped for a moment. She had imagined this place so many times. Now she was actually standing inside it. "Elena!" She turned. A familiar face came running toward her. "Chloe!" Her best friend threw her arms around her. "You actually came!" Elena laughed. "Of course I came." "I was beginning to think your parents would lock you in your room." "They almost did." Chloe pulled away. "Seriously?" Elena nodded. "I'll tell you everything later." Chloe looked around. "Come on. I'll show you the school before we get lost." They started walking through the courtyard. Elena listened as Chloe pointed out the library, science building, administration block, sports complex, and student center. Everything looked expensive. Everything looked perfect. Then they reached the basketball court. A group of students were gathered around it. The sound of a basketball hitting the floor echoed across the courtyard. Elena barely paid attention until Chloe suddenly stopped walking. "Oh." "What?" Chloe's expression changed. "What?" She nodded toward the court. "That's Damon." Elena looked. Three boys were standing near the basketball court. She immediately recognized Damon from the picture Chloe had once shown her. He was wearing the school uniform with his sleeves rolled up, a basketball tucked beneath one arm. Adrian stood beside him, laughing about something. Sebastian was leaning against the fence, watching them. Damon looked completely comfortable. As though the entire school belonged to him. Students greeted him as they passed. Girls smiled. Some whispered. A few openly stared. Damon barely noticed. Or perhaps he simply wasn't interested. Then a girl walked toward him. Beautiful. Confident. Expensively dressed. She said something that made Damon smile. Elena looked away. "Who is she?" Chloe hesitated. "Isabella Monroe." "Friend?" Chloe gave her a look. "Something like that." Before Elena could ask what she meant, the warning bell rang. Students began moving toward the buildings. Chloe grabbed Elena's hand. "We have to go." Elena followed her.
............................................................................. BLACKWOOD ACADEMY 🖋️ Chloe pulled her through the hallway just as the warning bell rang. Students were already rushing toward their classrooms, their voices filling the corridor. "Come on," Chloe said. "Unless you want your first day to begin with a late slip." "I've barely been here ten minutes." "And you've already stopped to admire the library, the courtyard, the trophy room and that fountain." "It's a beautiful fountain." Chloe laughed. "You're impossible." They reached their classroom just before the bell rang. Elena slipped into the seat beside Chloe and placed her bag on the floor. "Relax," Chloe whispered. "I am relaxed." "You're gripping your pen like you're about to fight somebody." Elena looked down and loosened her fingers. "I just don't want to mess up." "You won't." Before Elena could answer, the teacher walked in. "Good morning, everyone." The class settled down. "Good morning, Mrs. Carter." Mrs. Carter placed a few books on her desk before looking toward Elena. "We have a new student joining us this year." Elena immediately felt every eye in the room turn toward her. "Elena Hayes?" She stood. "Yes, ma'am." "Why don't you introduce yourself?" Elena swallowed. "My name is Elena Hayes. I'm a scholarship student." A few whispers traveled through the room. She pretended not to hear them. "I'm looking forward to the year." Mrs. Carter smiled. "Welcome to Blackwood Academy, Elena. You may sit." Elena sat down. Chloe leaned closer. "You survived." Elena smiled. "Barely." The lesson began. For the next hour, Elena forgot about everything else. She took notes, answered questions and quickly discovered that Blackwood Academy's reputation wasn't based only on its buildings and expensive uniforms. The students were genuinely competitive. By the time the bell rang, Elena already had three pages of notes. Chloe stared at her notebook. "Are you trying to finish the whole textbook today?" "I like being prepared." "You're going to fit in perfectly." They left the classroom with the rest of the students. As they walked down the hallway, Chloe pointed toward a group of girls standing near the lockers. "That's Victoria." Elena followed her gaze. Victoria Ashford stood with two girls. One of them was Sienna Laurent. And beside them was Isabella Monroe. Elena recognized her immediately. Isabella was beautiful in a way that seemed almost effortless. Her uniform looked perfectly tailored, her hair was flawless, and even the way she stood made people notice her. "That's them?" Elena asked. "Yep." "The famous trio?" Chloe nodded. "They've practically ruled this school since freshman year." Elena glanced at them again. "Why?" "Money. Popularity. Family connections. Take your pick." Isabella suddenly looked in their direction. Their eyes met. For a second, neither girl looked away. Then Isabella smiled politely. Elena returned the smile. Nothing more. Chloe tugged her arm. "Let's go." "Why?" "Because I know that look." "What look?" "The look that says you're about to ask questions." Elena laughed. "I wasn't." "You were." They continued walking. At the other end of the hallway, three boys were coming toward them. Adrian Cole was saying something that had Sebastian laughing. Damon walked between them, looking completely uninterested in whatever conversation they were having. Students moved aside as they approached. Elena noticed it. "Does everyone always move out of their way?" Chloe nodded. "Pretty much." "Why?" "Because they're them." "That still doesn't explain anything." Chloe smiled. "You'll learn." Damon passed them without saying a word. Elena barely looked at him. But Adrian did. He glanced at Elena, then at Damon. "That's the new girl." Damon didn't respond. "The scholarship student," Adrian added. "I heard you the first time." Sebastian smirked. "You seem interested." Damon looked at him. "I'm not." "Didn't say you were." Damon continued walking. "Good." Adrian laughed. "You're defensive for someone who doesn't care." Damon stopped. "I don't care." "Okay." "Adrian." "I'm quiet." "You're never quiet." Sebastian laughed. The three continued toward their next class. Meanwhile, Elena and Chloe reached the cafeteria. Elena stopped when she saw the size of it. "This is a cafeteria?" Chloe nodded. "Unfortunately." "This place is bigger than my entire neighborhood." Chloe laughed. "Come on." They collected their lunch and found a table near the windows. Elena was just opening her drink when someone dropped into the empty chair across from her. Adrian. He smiled. "Hi." Chloe sighed. "No." Adrian frowned. "I haven't even said anything." "I know you." Sebastian sat beside him. "You don't know him well enough to say that." "I know enough." Adrian looked at Elena. "You're Elena, right?" "Yes." "I'm Adrian." "I know." He raised an eyebrow. "You know me?" "You're always with Damon." Sebastian laughed. Adrian placed a hand over his chest. "Wow. I'm famous." "No. You're just loud." Chloe burst out laughing. Sebastian looked away, trying not to smile. Adrian stared at Elena for a moment before grinning. "I like you." Elena raised an eyebrow. "You don't know me." "Exactly. That's why I like you." Before she could respond, Damon appeared beside the table. He looked at Adrian. "Move." Adrian looked at the empty chairs around them. "Why?" "I want to sit." "There are plenty of seats." "I want that one." Adrian sighed dramatically and moved. Damon sat down. Elena looked at Chloe. Chloe looked at Elena. Neither said anything. Damon glanced at Elena. "You're the new student." Elena nodded. "Yes." "Scholarship." It wasn't a question. "Yes." He picked up his drink. "Okay." Elena frowned. "Okay?" Damon looked at her. "What do you want me to say?" "Nothing." "Then we're good." Elena looked away. Adrian suddenly laughed. "What?" "Nothing," Adrian said. "You two are funny." "We're not doing anything," Elena said. "I know." Damon gave Adrian a warning look. Adrian immediately became quiet. For the rest of lunch, Elena mostly talked with Chloe while the boys discussed basketball. She learned that Damon was captain of the school team and that they had an important game coming up. She also learned that Damon had apparently won almost every major school competition he had participated in. She didn't find that particularly impressive. At least, she wasn't going to tell him that it was. After lunch, the afternoon passed quickly. By the time the final bell rang, Elena felt exhausted. She and Chloe walked toward the school gates together. "So?" Chloe asked. "So what?" "Your first day." Elena smiled. "I survived." "And?" She looked back at the school. "I think I like it here." Chloe smiled. "I knew you would." Elena adjusted her backpack. "Except for one thing." "What?" "Everyone acts like Damon Blackwood is some kind of king." Chloe laughed. "He basically is." Elena rolled her eyes. "He's just a boy." "Keep telling yourself that." They reached the gate. A car stopped in front of Chloe. "My ride." Elena nodded. "I'll see you tomorrow." "Definitely." Chloe hugged her before getting into the car. Elena watched the car disappear before turning toward the road. She started walking home. For the first time since receiving her acceptance letter, she allowed herself to smile. Maybe her father had been wrong. Maybe Blackwood Academy wasn't something she needed to fear. Maybe she could actually build the future she'd always wanted here. Behind her, the school gates slowly closed. ADRIAN POV🖋️ And somewhere inside the school, Damon Blackwood was standing near the basketball court with Adrian and Sebastian. Adrian glanced toward the gates. "You know what I think?" Damon bounced the basketball once. "No." "I think the new girl is going to be interesting." Damon caught the ball. "She isn't." Sebastian looked at him. "You noticed her, though." Damon gave him a cold look. "I notice everyone who walks into my school." Adrian smiled. "Sure you do." Damon turned toward the court. "Can we play now?" Adrian laughed. "Fine." The ball hit the ground. Once. Twice. Then Damon suddenly stopped. His eyes moved toward the school entrance. For just a second, he looked thoughtful. Then the expression disappeared. "Forget it," he muttered. "What?" Sebastian asked. "Nothing." He threw the ball toward Adrian. But as they started playing, one thought stayed at the back of his mind. He didn't know why. He didn't know how. But somehow, he had a feeling Elena Hayes wasn't going to be as easy to ignore as he thought. ISABELLA POV🖋️ Inside the classroom, Isabella stood beside Elena's desk. Victoria and Sienna stood behind her. Isabella looked down at the small white envelope lying neatly on Elena's table. Her name was written across the front. ELENA HAYES. Victoria frowned. "Are you sure about this?" Isabella didn't answer. She picked up the envelope and turned it over. There was no name. No explanation. Just a small black crown drawn on the back. Sienna's expression changed. "You're actually doing this?"
Sienna kept staring at the envelope. "What?" Victoria asked again, watching her carefully. Sienna finally blinked and looked away. "Nothing." Victoria frowned. "That definitely wasn't a nothing face." "Let's just go." Isabella glanced at the envelope one last time before picking up her bag. "Come on." The three girls left the classroom without another word. --- The next morning, Elena walked into class with Chloe beside her, still half-asleep from barely getting enough rest. She dropped her bag on her desk. Then she stopped. There was a small white envelope sitting neatly on top of her notebook. Elena frowned. "What's that?" Chloe leaned over her shoulder. Written across the front, in bold black letters, were four words. HE IS MINE. Elena stared at it. "Who?" Chloe shrugged. "How am I supposed to know?" Elena picked up the envelope and turned it around. Nothing. No name. No signature. She looked around the classroom. Everyone seemed busy with their own conversations. "Maybe someone put it on the wrong desk," Chloe suggested. "Maybe." Elena slipped it into her bag. "Whatever. I don't have time for this." She sat down just as the teacher walked in. But for the rest of the morning, those four words stayed somewhere in the back of her mind. He is mine. She just didn't know who he was. --- The library was quieter than usual during lunch. Elena sat at one of the tables, surrounded by books and notes, determined to finish an assignment before the next class. She was halfway through writing when a shadow fell across her notebook. "You're sitting in my usual spot." Elena looked up. Isabella stood in front of her. Victoria and Sienna were behind her. Elena glanced around the library. "There are plenty of other seats." Isabella's expression hardened. "You're new, so I'll make this simple for you." Elena slowly closed her notebook. "I'm listening." "Blackwood Academy has an order," Isabella said. "People know where they belong. You shouldn't get confused just because you received a scholarship." Elena stared at her. "And where exactly do you think I belong?" Victoria smirked. Isabella folded her arms. "Somewhere that doesn't interfere with people above you." Elena stood. For a second, Isabella looked surprised. "So because I'm a scholarship student, I'm supposed to be afraid of you?" The library suddenly felt quieter. Elena continued, her voice calm. "I earned my place here. I didn't steal it from anyone." Isabella's jaw tightened. "You should learn when to keep quiet." "And you should learn that being rich doesn't make you better than everyone else." A boy sitting at a nearby table slowly lowered his book. His eyes widened. Everyone knew Isabella Monroe. And almost nobody spoke to her like that. Isabella stared at Elena for a long moment. "You're going to regret that." Elena picked up her notebook. "Maybe." She walked away. The boy watched her leave, then looked at Isabella. For the first time, he seemed genuinely impressed. --- That evening, Damon stood in the middle of his father's study with his arms folded. "I already told you," Damon said. "I'm not interested." His father's expression remained cold. "After you finish school and eventually complete college, you'll come back and take your position in the company." Damon gave a humorless laugh. "You're talking like I've already agreed." "You don't need to agree." His mother stepped forward. "That's enough." His father looked at her. "You keep encouraging him." "Because he has a dream." "He has responsibilities." Damon's jaw tightened. "Basketball isn't a hobby to me." His father shook his head. "You're the heir to everything I've built. One day, you'll understand that." "I don't want everything you've built." The room went silent. Damon's mother looked at him. His father stared at him with disappointment. "You'll grow out of this." "No," Damon said firmly. "I won't." He turned and walked out. His mother watched him leave. His father remained standing behind his desk. "He needs direction." She looked at him. "Maybe he needs you to listen." --- The next morning, Elena's class was unusually noisy. The teacher walked in carrying several folders. "Settle down, everyone." The noise slowly faded. She placed the folders on her desk. "I have some interesting news for you." Immediately, whispers filled the classroom. "We're going on two educational trips before graduation." The room erupted. "Two?" "Where?" "Seriously?" The teacher raised her hand. "First trip will be in two weeks." The class became quiet. "It will be a one-week adventure trip into the jungle." Excited murmurs spread across the room. "You'll be divided into groups. During the trip, you'll document what you see, what you learn, and your experiences. When you return, every group will submit everything they've recorded." Someone at the back cheered. The teacher smiled before continuing. "And that's not all." The class immediately became louder. "Our second trip will be to California." The room exploded. "California?!" "For how long?" "One month." The students screamed. "Yes," the teacher said, laughing at their reaction. "One full month, outside the regular academic calendar." Elena smiled faintly as she listened. Around her, everyone was already talking about beaches, hotels, shopping, pictures, and everything they wanted to do. Chloe leaned toward Elena. "We are definitely going." Elena laughed softly. --- After school, Elena and Chloe walked toward the school gate. Chloe was still talking about California. "Imagine spending a whole month there. A whole month, Elena!" "You've already planned your entire trip." "Obviously." Elena smiled. Then Chloe noticed her expression change. "What?" Elena looked ahead. "Nothing." "You're doing that thing again." "What thing?" "The thing where you pretend everything is fine." Elena sighed. They continued walking for a few seconds. Then Elena stopped. "Chloe..." "What?" Elena adjusted the strap of her bag on her shoulder. "I don't think I'm going." Chloe's smile disappeared.
