Bound to the iron alpha
Chapter 1 THE LAST MIDNIGHT

Elena The countdown hit five minutes to midnight and I was already lying to myself. "Sixty seconds, baby girl!" Reyna called out, lifting her glass high across the VIP booth. The music was so loud it shook my chest. Colored lights flashed over everyone dancing like crazy. I forced a smile and tapped my glass against hers. "I can't believe I'm finally twenty-one." Reyna leaned in close so I could hear her. "You look nervous. Stop it. Cole is watching you from the bar. He's been staring all night." My heart did a little flip. I turned my head and there he was - Cole Hartley. Tall, golden hair, amber eyes that always made me feel safe. He caught me looking and gave me that slow smile I had loved for years. I smiled back, but something felt off tonight. My wolf, Selene, moved inside me. Not the warm, happy way she usually did when Cole smiled. This time she felt restless. Relax, I told her in my head. She did not answer. Cole and I had been promised to each other since I was seventeen. We grew up together. We ate at the same table, laughed at the same jokes, and kissed for the first time under the big oak tree at the pack border when I was sixteen. I loved him. It was steady love. The kind you don't have to think too hard about. Tonight was the night everything would be clear. The old wolves always said the mate bond wakes up at midnight on your twenty-first birthday. If Cole was my true mate, I would feel it the second the clock turned. If he wasn't... I didn't want to think about that. I touched the pretty crescent moon pendant around my neck. Cole gave it to me for my birthday. It felt warm against my skin. "Don't panic before it happens," I whispered to myself. "Or after," Selene said inside my head. Her voice sounded strange. Worried. Reyna was already pouring more drink into my glass before I could even say no. She filled it almost to the top. "You don't have to keep filling it," I said with a small laugh. "I'm already feeling it." "It's your birthday, Elena! Enjoy yourself," she said, smiling big. For once, the smile actually reached her eyes. "Come on, one more. For me?" I drank. The sweet liquid burned a little going down. The music started to sound fuzzy. The lights looked too bright. My legs felt warm and heavy, like they didn't want to listen to me anymore. Selene pushed hard against my skin. Elena. Something is wrong. I tried to stand up. The floor tilted under me. "Reyna-" Her seat was empty. I turned around fast. Everything spun. Someone grabbed me from behind - hard hands on my arms. I tried to pull away but my body felt slow and weak. "Reyna? Cole?" I called out. My voice sounded small. The loud music swallowed it up. They pulled me backward through the crowd. I grabbed at a table, a stranger's sleeve, anything. My fingers slipped. A cold door opened. Night air hit my face. Then I was inside a small dark room that smelled like dust, cigarettes, and something wild. I fell onto a dirty mattress. My arms shook as I tried to push myself up. A man stood over me. He smelled like a rogue - no pack scent, just anger and hunger. I didn't know his face. "Please," I whispered. "Don't-" He grabbed my wrist and pushed me back down. "No!" I cried. The door exploded. Wood flew everywhere. A loud roar filled the room - deep, angry, full of power. The rogue ripped me like he weighed nothing. I heard fists hitting flesh. Grunts. A bone cracked. Then everything went quiet. Heavy footsteps came toward the bed. I crawled back until my back hit the headboard. My heart was beating so fast I thought it would break. Selene had gone completely still inside me. A tall man stepped into the weak light coming from the broken door. He had to duck his head to come in. Dark hair. Strong jaw. Storm-grey eyes that looked right into me. Blood was on the cuff of his dark suit. He looked at me like he had been searching for me his whole life. For a second, neither of us spoke. He bent down slowly and picked up my shoes from the floor. Then he placed them gently on the edge of the mattress. He didn't touch me. He just waited, watching me with those intense eyes. "I'm not going to hurt you," he said. His voice was deep and rough, like gravel and honey mixed together. "Can you stand?" I stared at him. My body still felt weak from whatever Reyna put in my drink, but something else was happening now. Something bigger. The clock on the dirty wall started to chime. One... two... three... Twelve. Midnight. Selene exploded inside me. MATE! The word hit me like a lightning bolt. A warm, golden pull burst open in my chest. It felt like the Moon Goddess herself reached inside me and tied my soul to his. I made a small sound I couldn't hold back. My hand moved on its own and grabbed the front of his suit. He froze completely. His grey eyes dropped to my fingers holding his jacket, then slowly came back up to my face. Something wild and scared and happy all at once moved across his expression. "Your name," he said, his voice rougher now. "Tell me your real name." "Elena," I whispered. My voice shook. "Elena Vasquez." He closed his eyes tight for a second, like my name hurt him in a good way. When he opened them again, they looked like a storm about to break. "Zane," he said. "Zane Cole." He let out a long breath. "We've got a serious problem." I didn't let go of his jacket. I couldn't. The bond was singing so loud between us that everything else felt far away. "You feel it too?" I asked softly. "Like fire in my blood," he answered. His hand came up slowly and touched my cheek. His thumb brushed my skin so gently it made me shiver. "I've waited my whole life to feel this. And it had to be tonight." I laughed a little, even though tears were filling my eyes. "I was supposed to find out if my betrothed was my mate tonight. Instead I found you." Zane's jaw tightened. "You're promised to someone else?" I nodded. "Cole Hartley. Alpha heir of Silver Crest." He didn't pull away. If anything, he moved closer. "The bond doesn't lie, Elena. You're mine. And I'm yours." His words sent heat rushing through me. I should have been scared. I should have run. But all I wanted was to stay right here with this stranger who felt like home. "Zane," I said, tasting his name. "What do we do now?" He looked at my lips. "Right now? I want to kiss you so you never forget this night." My heart raced. "Then kiss me." He didn't need to be told twice. Zane leaned in slowly, giving me time to pull away. I didn't. His lips met mine - and the world stopped. It wasn't gentle. It wasn't soft. It was like finally breathing after being underwater for years. The bond roared between us, golden and loud and real. Then Cole's face crossed my mind. I pulled back hard. Zane let me go instantly. No resistance. No argument. We were both breathing fast. "You don't have to explain," he said quietly. "I'm sorry," I whispered. "I can't. Not like this." He nodded once. Sat back. Gave me space. That single act of restraint did more to me than the kiss did. I looked around the room properly for the first time. The rogue was unconscious in the corner - but he hadn't fought like a random attacker. His grip had been too practiced. Too deliberate. Like someone who had done this before and expected no consequences. Someone sent him, Selene said quietly. I filed that away. His jaw tightened when my fingers touched his arm. Something flickered in his eyes - not anger. Something older than anger. "Sorry," I said, pulling my hand back. "Don't be," he said. But he didn't explain. Then I slipped out the broken door and ran into the night. By the time I reached the pack house, the sun was starting to rise. I stood under the hot shower, crying hard. The mating mark on my neck was still there - fresh and beautiful. A clear sign that Zane was mine. But I knew I had to face Cole in a few hours. I had no idea that by the time the bonding ceremony started, that beautiful mark would be completely gone. And my whole world was about to burn down around me.

Chapter 2 What remains

Zane She fell asleep within minutes. One second she was sitting upright against the headboard, knees pulled to her chest, arms wrapped around herself like she was trying to hold her own pieces together. The next, her head dropped sideways and her breathing went slow and even. The tension left her face all at once. She looked younger when she slept. Softer. Like the night hadn't happened yet. I didn't move. Raven was loud in my head. Cover her. She's cold. I reached across slowly and pulled the edge of the dusty blanket over her shoulders. My hand stopped an inch from her arm. I didn't touch her. I just tucked the fabric close and pulled back. Old habit. I sat on the floor with my back against the wall and watched the door instead. The broken wood still hung at an angle. Cold air came through the gap where the frame had splintered. The rogue was gone - I had dragged him out earlier and left him at the edge of the lot for whoever came looking. A message, not a conversation. The music from the club was quieter now. Just a low pulse through the walls. Outside, I could hear boots on pavement. Voices. The ordinary noise of a city that had no idea what had just happened in this room. I stretched my legs out and crossed my arms. You're not going to sleep, Raven said. "I don't sleep." You should. "Someone has to watch the door." Raven went quiet. He knew that wasn't the real reason. He always knew. I had not slept properly in eleven years. Not since I was sixteen and Raven first pushed through fully - all that rage and instinct and grief flooding into me at once with no warning and no one to explain it. Since then, sleep meant the dark place. The forest. The cold. A small boy's hands reaching up from black water, and no one reaching back. I didn't know whose memory it was. It felt like mine. But I had no childhood to put it in. I looked at Elena. Her lips were slightly parted. Her dark hair had fallen across her face. One hand was open on the blanket, palm up, fingers loose. Like even in sleep she was waiting to hold something. The mate bond was quieter now that she was unconscious. Not gone. Just... resting. Like it had done what it needed to do for the night and was satisfied. I was not satisfied. I was many things right now, but satisfaction was not one of them. She had a betrothed. An Alpha heir. A whole life was arranged and planned and waiting for her before sunrise. She had pulled away from our kiss herself - which told me she had a conscience and a spine, both of which I respected - and then asked me what we were supposed to do now, like I had the answer. I didn't have the answer. I had a pack to run, a missing identity I couldn't name, and a letter I hadn't told anyone about burning a hole in the back of my mind. I had a wolf who hadn't shut up in four hours. And now I had a mate sleeping three feet away from me who was going to wake up and walk back into another man's arms. Maybe, Raven said. "Probably." She pulled away. She didn't leave. "She'll leave in the morning." And if she comes back? I looked at the ceiling. A water stain spread across it in the shape of something I didn't have a name for. "Then we'll figure it out." Raven went quiet again. Around two in the morning, Elena shifted. She made a small sound - not quite distress, not quite peace - and curled onto her side, pulling the blanket tighter. Her brow furrowed for a second like something in her dream bothered her. Then it smoothed out. I watched her breathe. In, out. Slow and steady. Somewhere around three, without meaning to, I closed my eyes. The forest was dark. It was always dark in this place. Black trees with no leaves. Ground that felt like it would give way under my feet if I stood still too long. The cold that came from everywhere at once - not just the air but from inside, from the bones out. I had been here a hundred times. I walked the same path. The same black water appeared between the roots. The same small hands broke the surface, reaching up. I moved toward them the way I always did, knowing I would be too slow, knowing the water would close over them before I arrived- Something warm pressed against my side. I stopped. The forest was still there. The water was still there. But there was warmth now, steady and quiet, against my left side. Like a hand. Like a presence. Like someone standing close enough that their heat reached me even in the cold. The hands in the water went still. The water didn't close. I stood there, not moving, afraid that if I breathed wrong the warmth would disappear. The small hands below the surface were just floating now. Not sinking. Not reaching. Just there, suspended, waiting. The cold pulled back an inch. I woke up. The room was grey with early light. The kind of light that comes before sunrise when the sky hasn't decided what color it wants to be yet. I was still on the floor, back against the wall. The warmth was gone. I knew before I opened my eyes. The steady pull that had been sitting in my chest all night had gone quiet in a different way - not resting, not sleeping. Absent. Like a door closing gently in another room. I sat up. The mattress held the shape of her. The blanket was folded back neatly at one corner - she had tried not to disturb it. Her dark hair had left an impression on the pillow. Her scent was everywhere, wrapped into the fabric of this room so thoroughly that it would probably take days to fade. Raven was silent. Not the waiting silence from earlier. A different kind. The kind that comes after something has already happened and there's nothing useful left to say. I stood up slowly. My back ached from the floor. I rolled my shoulder and looked at the broken door, the cold light coming through the gap. She was gone. The thought sat in my chest without drama. Just a fact. A weight I didn't know how to categorize yet. I moved toward the door and then stopped. Her shoes were by the frame. Both of them. Placed neatly side by side, like she had set them down with intention. Not forgotten. Left. There was a difference and I felt it clearly even if I couldn't have explained it to anyone. I picked them up. They were small. Heeled, silver, one strap slightly bent from the struggle earlier. I held them for a moment without thinking about why. She left them on purpose, Raven said finally. "I know." She wants you to know she was here. That it was real. I didn't answer. I turned the shoes over in my hands once, then set them carefully on the mattress. I pulled out my phone and called Torres. He picked up before the second ring, which meant he hadn't slept either. "Sir." "Elena Vasquez," I said. "Beta's daughter from Silver Crest. I need everything. Where she lives, who she answers to, what she does on Tuesdays. Start now." A pause. Short but noticeable. Torres had worked with me for three years and I had never once called him before six in the morning for anything personal. "Understood," he said carefully. "Thirty minutes." I hung up and stood in the middle of the broken room. The grey light was getting lighter. Somewhere outside a car started up. The city was waking up and going about its business like nothing had shifted. Something had shifted. I looked at the shoes on the mattress. "She'll come back," Raven said. His voice was quieter than usual. Certain in the way he got sometimes, when he was reading something I hadn't caught up to yet. I picked up my jacket from the floor and shook the dust off it. I wasn't sure if I believed him. But I left the shoes exactly where I'd placed them. Carried nothing out of that room except her scent on my clothes and the echo of a nightmare that, for one night, had not been able to finish itself. That was enough to build something on. For now, it had to be.

Chapter 3 The wedding that wasn't

Elena I stood in the small side room next to the big ceremony hall. My white dress felt too tight. The lace on the sleeves itched my skin. I looked in the mirror one last time and touched the spot on my neck where Zane had bitten me. The mating mark was gone. Completely gone. My skin was smooth like nothing had happened. No red mark. No sign of the bond. My hands started shaking. "What is this?" I whispered to myself. "Selene, what happened?" He is still our mate, Selene said inside my head. She sounded confused and scared. The bond is still there. But something is hiding it. I did not have time to think about it. The bonding ceremony was about to start. I had to tell Cole the truth before everyone sat down. The door opened hard. Cole walked in fast. His golden hair was perfect, but his face looked dark and angry. His amber eyes burned with something I had never seen before. "Cole," I said quickly. "We need to talk. Something happened last night-" "Where the hell were you?" he cut me off. His voice was low and sharp. He stepped closer. "My father's guards saw you coming back across the east border this morning. Alone. Before dawn. You smell like another man, Elena. Don't lie to me." My heart beat so fast it hurt. "I was going to tell you everything. Please listen. I was drugged at the club. A rogue attacked me. Then this man saved me and-" "And you slept with him?" Cole's voice got louder. "On the night before our bonding ceremony?" "No!" I cried. "We didn't go all the way. The mate bond woke up with him. His name is Zane. It was so strong, Cole. I felt it in my whole body. But I stopped. I ran back because I wanted to be honest with you first." Cole laughed, but it was a cold, mean sound. "The mate bond? With a stranger? You expect me to believe that?" He grabbed my arm tight. His fingers dug into my skin as he pulled me out of the room with so much force. "Come with me.", he said with anger in his voice. He pulled me out of the small room and into the big ceremony hall. Two hundred people turned to look at us. The music stopped. Everyone went quiet. Cole stopped in the middle of the hall. He still held my wrist tight. "I will not bind myself to a woman who spent her birthday in a rogue's bed!" he shouted. His voice carried across the whole room. Gasps and whispers filled the hall. I felt like the floor was disappearing under my feet. "Cole, please," I begged. "Let me explain to everyone." Reyna stepped forward from the front row. She looked sad, but I saw something mean in her eyes. "I didn't want it to come to this," she said in a sweet voice. "But Cole deserves the truth. Elena told me last night that she never really loved him. She said she only stayed with him for the Luna title. I saw her leave with the rogue." My mouth fell open. "Reyna! That's a lie! You drugged me! You know that's not true!" She wiped fake tears from her eyes. "I'm so sorry, Elena. I tried to stop you." Reyna stepped forward and wiped her eyes delicately. I watched her hands. They were perfectly still. Not a single tremor. People who are genuinely devastated - their hands shake. Their shoulders curl inward. Reyna's posture was open and so rehearsed. She had practiced this moment. I looked at my father next. He was already moving toward Reyna's side before Cole even finished his sentence. Like he already knew where to stand. They all knew, Selene said quietly. Every single one of them had known before I walked into that hall. Then Darian stepped out from the side. He looked messy on purpose, like a real rogue. "She came with me willingly," he said loudly. "We've been seeing each other for months. She wanted one last night of fun before she got stuck with the Alpha heir." Darian finished speaking and the hall erupted. I stared at him through the noise. He wasn't looking at Cole for approval the way a man who had just done someone a favor would. He wasn't looking at Reyna. He was staring at a fixed point on the far wall, jaw tight, like he was somewhere else entirely. This performance bored him. Or cost him something he hadn't expected to pay. I filed that away without knowing why. My father stood up. His face looked broken. "Father, please," I said. "This is all lies. They set me up." My father looked at me for a long time. Then he walked over to Reyna and put his arm around her shoulders. "Reyna has always been like a real daughter to me," he said in a loud voice. "From today, she is my daughter. Elena... you are no longer part of this family." My mother turned her face away. She would not even look at me. I felt like someone stabbed me in the chest. Cole let go of my wrist. "The betrothal is dissolved. As of today, I will bond with my true fated mate, Reyna Vasquez." Reyna smiled and took Cole's hand. She looked so happy. I stood there in my white dress, shaking. Selene was crying inside me. Two guards came and grabbed my arms. "You are banished from the Silver Crest Pack," Cole said coldly. "Leave now. Don't ever come back." They started pulling me toward the doors. I looked back one last time. Everyone I loved was turning away from me. As the guards took me down the corridor, we passed an older woman standing in the shadows. Cassandra. Cole's mother. Luna of Silver Crest. She looked at me and smiled. Small. Satisfied. Like she had been waiting a long time for exactly this moment. Why was she smiling? I didn't have an answer. But I didn't forget it either.
